Course Description

Welcome to Cruise Interpreting. It is, by nature, its own unique opportunity to work with a variety of people and see the world. It can be a lot of work. It is fun. It can be stressful. It can be very rewarding. It offers many challenges. As we face daily ethical decisions and make choices to best fit whatever situation is at hand, the same applies to cruise interpreting. It is not a working vacation. It is not your vacation. It is not about you. Just like on land. It is about making the cruise experience accessible to the deaf/hh community. The goal is to provide equal access. Can you make a positive impact on the experience for the deaf/hh pax? Of course. Can you also make a negative impact? Of course. Hopefully, this course will answer questions, address general concerns, and equip you to be able to do the best job possible making a cruise accessible. You are not responsible for making sure the passengers have fun. You are responsible for interpreting cruise-hosted events, excursions, etc so the passenger(s) has equal access to safety information and entertainment. Let’s get started so you can prepare for your next cruise and be successful!
