RID Activity Number: WRKSP113685QCCR | MICS Activity Number: 0238.0625.03| taught by Jeffrey & April Dunlap
End-of-life settings are emotionally complex, deeply personal, and culturally significant. In this workshop, we explore the unique role of sign language interpreters when working alongside a Death Doula during the dying process.
Through conversation, reflection, and insights from a practicing Death Doula, this session offers a compassionate look at how interpreters can ethically and respectfully support Deaf individuals and their families during one of life’s most profound transitions.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the Death Doula’s role, the dynamics of end-of-life communication, and the emotional demands placed on interpreters in these settings. The workshop emphasizes language choice, presence, emotional regulation, and self-care.
It encourages interpreters to hold space with clarity, professionalism, and empathy—while honoring the linguistic and cultural needs of the Deaf community.
